UnaSource Surgery Center participates in two statewide quality collaboratives, the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI) and the Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC) in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Ultimately, both collaboratives strive to improve quality, safety, and surgical outcomes for orthopaedic patients in Michigan.
Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI)
MARCQI was founded in 2011. MARCQI is comprised of over ninety Michigan hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers that share the common goal of improving the quality of care provided to total hip and knee joint replacement patients. Quality improvement is driven by reducing intra and post-operative complications such as: fractures, infections, blood clots, unplanned hospital admissions, and emergency department visits. Pain management, opioid prescribing, patient reported outcomes (PROS), identification of devices/implants with superior outcomes, and reducing revision surgeries are just a few of the best practices the collaborative scrutinizes to ensure patient receive the most optimum total joint replacement care.
Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC)
MSSIC was founded in 2013 and is comprised of a variety of Michigan hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. The collaborative seeks to measure and improve the care and outcomes of patients undergoing complex spine surgeries such as laminectomy, discectomy, and fusion. MSSIC’s quality improvement focus is based on the prevention of surgical complications, implementing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols to optimize patients before and after surgical intervention, and controlling the use of opioids for post-operative surgical pain relief by incorporating multimodal pain management interventions. MSSIC aims to enhance the outcome of spine surgery and improve patients’ quality of life while simultaneously driving down the cost of care.
What does this mean for our patients?
Simply put, our voluntary participation with these organizations is an example of our committment to excellence, and ensures that the total joint replacement or spine surgery our patient receives is of the best possible quality. Is the hospital or surgery center you’re considering held to the same high standards? Unsure? Ask!
