Here are our answers to some common questions asked by people considering joint replacement surgery. While we offer these answers as a general guideline on what to expect for outpatient joint replacement surgery, we strongly encourage you to talk to your surgeon for the most accurate information as each patient and each surgery is unique.
How do I know I need my joint replaced?
Evaluation by a trusted orthopaedic surgeon and appropriate imaging will determine if a patient is a candidate for surgery. Often non-surgical options such as physical therapy or Cortisone injections are used before deciding on surgical intervention. Key considerations for treatment type are pain and loss of mobility or strength.
How long will my new joint replacement last?
Current research states new joint implants can last around 20 years with a low impact lifestyle.
How can I find a list of surgeons who operate at UnaSource Surgery Center?
We have a search tool on our website with informative profiles on all of the active surgeons here at UnaSource Surgery Center. Click on the surgeon’s photo to view their biography, educational background, practice locations, and contact information. You can even filter your search by specialty, such as joint replacement or orthopaedic surgery.
How long is recovery?
The first 8 weeks after your surgery are important for healing, mobility and strength. Full recovery may take up to a year for some patients.
Does a joint replacement hurt?
Pain is expected after a joint replacement. Most patients experience increased soreness and stiffness 2-3 days after surgery with improvement by day 4. Pain will continue at times throughout the recovery period and differs for each patient. Pain can be managed with medications, numbing of the nerve, gentle movement, ice and elevation.
Do I have to take narcotics?
Most patients do find it necessary to take the prescribed narcotics to manage the pain. However, non-narcotic medications can also be used as directed.
What is the PT program?
Each surgeon will have a physical therapy plan to follow. Evidence shows that early movement is important for good outcomes after a joint replacement. All total knee and hip replacement patients work with physical therapy at the center prior to going home.
What can I do before surgery to help my recovery after surgery?
There are a few things you can do prior to surgery that may contribute to a strong recovery, including gentle exercise, eating a well-balanced diet, staying hydrated and getting adequate rest. Click here to read our blog on Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)
